In 1942 Edmund Fürholzer published a book entitled Arro! Arro! So sah ich Tibet where he described his journey in 1936 from Shanghai to Labrang Monastery including a brief report on his audience with the 9th Panchen Lama. Even though his visit to Labrang was short and he was relatively inexperienced in Tibetan culture and language, he was very keen and prepared for this journey. He had read books from Alexandra David-Néel and Eric Teichmann and among others had been also acquainted with Ernst Schäfer and Wilhelm Filchner.
My talk will be based on the IOA Library of University of Bonn holdings of his original notes, photographs, various documents and even a short film from this journey together with other unpublished materials remaining in the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz. Part of my M.A. thesis, this account gives a unique perspective on past events in Tibet and China and makes connections to other contemporary eyewitness accounts.
