Bonn International Graduate School - Oriental and Asian Studies
Welcome
The Bonn International Graduate School - Oriental and Asian Studies (BIGS-OAS) is one of seven International Graduate Schools of the University of Bonn and the only one within the Faculty of Arts.
BIGS-OAS investigates the cultures and societies of Asia and the Middle East in change through time and processes of global interaction. The Graduate School combines the broad regional and thematic scope of the University of Bonn's Oriental and Asian based social sciences and humanities. The doctoral students are incorporated into the Graduate School's framework of a structured doctoral program, that will lead to a completion of their Ph.D. within four years. The curriculum encourages their theoretical, methodological, and occupational competencies and prepares them for a competent participation in the international research community. As a rule, research and field studies abroad are integrated into the second or third year of the graduate program. A special emphasis is laid on the intensive support of the individual doctoral projects by the advisor (from the field of subject) and as well from discussions and research colloquia that are offered by the graduate school.

The Fifth Eurasian Doctoral Colloquium in Erlangen
This year’s Fifth Eurasian Doctoral Colloquium focused on questions of global knowledge transfer, translation practices, and transnational entanglements between China, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Japan. The event, which took place from October 11–13, 2024, is held annually in cooperation with eight Eurasian universities (China/Germany/Japan/Korea) and was hosted by the Department of Sinology at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU).
The topic titled Multiperspectivity in Global History - Challenges and Opportunities gave the doctoral students the opportunity to discuss their dissertation projects and exchange academic ideas and questions. Accompanied by BIGS-OAS coordinator Franca Küffer, three doctoral students of the BIGS-OAS joined the conference with presentations of their research projects.
In addition to the scientific exchange, the doctoral students had the opportunity to get to know each other personally and make new contacts during an interesting city tour of Erlangen and a joint dinner in a traditional Bavarian brewery. The conference concluded with a visit to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg. A big thank you for the great organization to the FAU!
