For many students, studying abroad is the highlight of their degree course. Are you planning to spend one or two terms at a foreign university or complete a language course abroad? We recommend that you contact the institution early and, if relevant, submit a scholarship application.

The AIK provides support and encourages its students to enhance their qualifications, career prospects and intercultural competence and gain personal experience by spending time abroad.
In the BA core subject of Asian Studies with the specialization in Art History in Asia and the Orient, you can be credited with experience abroad within the context of the following modules (see BA Module Overview):

“Studies and Practice: Asian and Oriental Art” (AIK 2) This module aims to provide initial familiarization with the world of work. Practical, art historical skills are to be gained during an internship.

“Assignment: Asian and Oriental Art” (AIK 3) In this module, you independently handle a topic of your choice from an academic point of view.

In the MA in Asian Studies with the specialization in Art History in Asia and the Orient, there are also two modules suitable for this (see MA Module Overview):

“Practical Module: Art in Asia and the Orient” (AIK 4)

“Personal Project: Independent Research in Asia and the Orient” (AIK 5).

The department cooperates with the Kathmandu University, Nepal, on the International Postgraduate Program in Landscape, Heritage and Tourism Management. You can find further information about the programme here.

The University of Bonn operates a direct exchange programme, which is partly funded by scholarships, with places at more than 45 partner universities in North and Central America, Asia, Australia and Europe. Some of these offer interesting courses for students of Asian and Islamic Art History.
Alongside study trips, internships, which may be funded for example by ERASMUS or the DAAD, provide a good opportunity to gain experience abroad. Besides the above-mentioned module “Studies and Practice”, you can additionally complete the inter-institute module “Intercultural Competence Internship” in Germany or abroad.
